Sustainability:
The lines that once defined industry’s environmental improvement
programs are being reformed. That’s positive news, because today’s
business practices and projects must be scoped in broader terms. There
is a growing awareness in business and government that all aspects of
their activities must offer environmental, economic and social benefits.
The three-pronged approach reflects the principles of sustainable
development – ensuring that future generations are not disadvantaged by
our actions today.
During 2008, the SLEA’s focus on sustainable development brought about
some changes to its ongoing programs and priorities. An increasing role
was taken on in the work of the Bluewater Sustainability Initiative
(BSI), a forum of private- and public-sector stakeholders introducing
sustainable development initiatives in Sarnia-Lambton.
